Merely Players’ Studio Series is an exciting addition to our annual mainstage shows, developed with the intent of fostering local talent and providing theatre artists and community audiences with an array of theatrical experiences and opportunities. The Studio Series is designed to inspire artists who are a part of our artistic company to envision and develop their own theatrical projects, with the encouragement, mentoring, resources, and financial support of Merely Players. It provides an avenue for artists to create a production without being encumbered by time-consuming and expensive administrative elements. The Studio Series is a branch on the Merely Players tree.

First up, we invite you to join us for some quirky, poignant, NYC-style comedy mixed with live musical accompaniment in our next Studio Series show, entitled

So the thing that happened was…

Darcy Burke grew up in Durango and left at 18. It is now almost 20 years later. She’s back, and she has discovered that she is an unreliable narrator of her own life. In a new solo show that combines stand-up, storytelling and music, Darcy has written a comedically tender piece to explore the stories we create about ourselves, the histories we write, and how we never remember anyone accurately from high school.

The show will play twice on November 5 and 6, 2021 at 7:00 pm and again at 8:30 pm. The running time is 40 minutes. All performers have been vaccinated.

We strongly encourage our audience members to be vaccinated and/or to have a negative covid test before entering our theatre. If you are feeling poorly, please call us to release your tickets and do not attend.

No tickets or reservations are required. Just show up at Merely Underground 15 minutes before curtain with your mask on and pay what you wish at the door.

So the thing that happened was… contains mature content and language and is recommended for audience members who are not easily offended and are 18+.

Written and Performed by Darcy Burke with Music by Lacey Black.

Erika Vetter (Hermia in our 2018’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream) returns to Durango to direct Annie Baker’s quiet love letter to the seemingly-mundane-but-actually-extraordinarily-human microcosm of small-town community and the individuals that make it so.  Five humans gather in a dance studio to embark on a unique journey together in a creative drama class for adults. In this one small room, through theatre games, quiet wars are waged, emotional wounds are nursed, and healing is finally, slowly, able to begin.
